Abstract

Chronic pain is a persistent condition that significantly affects the quality of life and functionality of orthopedic patients. Non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs) serve as vital complementary approaches to pharmacological methods in pain management. Nurses play a central role in the implementation of NPIs, and their perceptions and attitudes are critical to the effective integration of these methods into clinical practice. This study aims to assess the perception and attitude of nurses towards the use of NPIs in chronic pain management among orthopedic patients, determine the prevalence of NPI use, and identify the most common types employed. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 178 nurses at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. Participants were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using a validated structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Ethical clearance was obtained and informed consent was secured from all respondents. The study found that (53.93%) of the nurses had a good perception of NPIs, while 50% demonstrated a favorable attitude. The prevalence of NPI usage was high at (51.69%). Positioning and physical therapy/exercise programmes were the most commonly utilized NPIs. While the perception and attitude of nurses toward NPIs were generally positive, several barriers such as inadequate resources and lack of formal training limit their practical application. It is recommended that healthcare facilities provide adequate support, including training and resources, to enhance the effective use of NPIs in chronic pain management.
