Abstract

The girl-child often faces limitations in life, such as parents’ preference for boys, less access to quality education and other social health needs. Previous studies have reported the perceived low status of the girl-child and harmful practices are unabating. This study was designed to evaluate the outcome of Nurse-led counselling on girl-child level of resilience to cope with family challenges among vulnerable families in Iwo, Osun State. Determination and endurance ability was scaled as negative (11.00 – 32.99), neutral (33.00 – 46.99), and positive (47.00 – 55.00), adaptability and recuperation as negative (6.00 – 17.99), neutral (18.00 – 25.79) and positive (25.80 – 30.00). Data were collected at baseline (P0) and at 16 weeks (P1), 32 weeks (P2) and 42 weeks (P3). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square and ANOVA at α0.05. Age was IG 13±1.00 and CG 13±1.50 years. At P0, determination of IG and CG ranked negative (28.90±5.50 and 28.38±6.10). A significant change occurred at P2 and P3 in IG (41.36±10.90, 43.78±11.60) than CG (34.98±8.30, 36.96±9.00). Endurance was negative at P0 in IG (28.80±5.60) and CG (30.80±5.50) but a significant change was observed at P3 in IG (47.52±11.20) compared to CG (36.85±8.90). Adaptability was higher in CG (16.38±1.90) than IG (14.22±4.40) at P0, but at P1 CG had (18.12±1.90) and IG (16.92±5.80). The IG score was significant at P2 (21.00±5.04) and P3 (24.60 ±5.90) compared to CG (18.42±1.94) at P2 and (19.74±2.00) at P3. Recuperation was negative (15.78±3.30) in IG, and CG (17.52±4.00), neutral in IG (20.34±4.50) at P1, P2 (22.26±5.10) and high at P3 (25.38±6.50), negative in CG at P1 (17.88±4), P2 (18.42±5.00) and neutral (19.26±4.90) at P3. Resilience in IG on determination was low at P0 (2.63±0.50) and normal at P3 (3.98±1.00). Resilience in IG on endurance was low at P0 (2.71±0.50), but significantly high at P3 (4.32±1.00) compared with CG (3.35±0.80). Resilience on adaptability in CG was higher at P0 (2.72±0.50) than IG (2.37±0.40), but significantly increased in IG at P3 (4.10±1.00) while CG was 3.29±0.80. Resilience on recuperation was low in IG and CG at P0 [IG (2.63±0.6), CG (2.92±0.70)] but normal at P3 [IG (4.23±1.10), CG (3.21±0.80)].  Nurse-led counselling intervention improved participants' resilience in determination to succeed, increased their endurance capacity. It enhanced their adaptability and quick recuperation in difficulties. Nurses should adopt the interventions when handling issues related to resilience in girl-child from vulnerable families.
