Abstract

This study undertakes a comprehensive examination of secondary school supervision within the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, employing a survey research design. The population comprises 850 principals, vice principals, and teachers across 24 secondary schools in the area. A sample of 110 respondents, consisting of 30 principals/vice principals and 80 teachers, was selected using simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected through a self-constructed questionnaire titled "Evaluation of Supervisory Responsibilities of Principals for Effective Administration in Secondary Schools (ESRPEASS)" and analyzed using Z-test statistics. The study underwent validation by three experts, with a trial test conducted on 30 teachers and principals from outside the study area to ensure instrument reliability. Three research questions guided the investigation. Findings revealed that effective school supervision necessitates the collaborative efforts of external supervisors, principals, and subject heads. However, shortcomings such as inadequate supervision attributed to principals' meetings, transportation challenges, data insufficiency, and insufficient incentives and remuneration were identified. Recommendations include the provision of necessary materials and facilities to aid supervisors, principals, and teachers in their duties. Additionally, a call is made for the State Government to prioritize education funding across all levels and foster a positive attitude toward educational investment.
