Influence of Contraceptive Devices Utilization and Biology Education Students’ Academic Outcome at the Tertiary Institutions, North- Central, Nigeria
Abstract
The study sought to determine the influence of contraceptive devices utilization and biology
education students’ academic outcome at the Tertiary Institutions, North- Central, Nigeria.
The study adopted survey descriptive research design. The population for this study was 2220
biology education students drawn from the tertiary institutions from the north central zone in
Nigeria. Using purposive sampling technique, three colleges of education, four polytechnics
and five universities were sampled from the tertiary institutions from the study area. Stratified
sampling was used to produce a representative sample of 1225. Using (30%), a sample size
of 667 Biology Education Students. The instrument for data collection was a structured
questionnaire, titled “Contraceptive Devices Utilization and Biology Education Students’
Outcome (CONDUBESO). The instrument developed by the researcher, has three sections, A,
B and C. and built on a 5point-rating scale of Very High Influence (VHI) =5 points, High
Influence (HI 4 points), Moderately Influence (MI =3points) Low Influence (LI=2points) Very
Low Influence (VLI =1point). The instrument was validated by three experts, the internal
consistency of the instrument was trial tested on 30 biology education students, yielded a
reliability coefficient 0.82. The instrument was administered within one month and out of 667
copies of the questionnaire administered 607 copies were correctly filled retrieved. Thus,
giving (91%) return rate. Mean and Standard Deviation was used in answering the research
questions while related t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The
Finding showed that utilization of barrier methods, hormonal method, and emergency
contraception had a moderate influence on Biology Education Students’ Academic Outcome
at Tertiary Institutions North Central, Nigeria. It was recommended among others that biology
education students should be educated by their science educators and lecturers on maintaining
a healthy balance between personal life and academic responsibilities to minimize distractions
and potential negative influences.
