Abstract

One of the most striking things to happen to education globally is the integration of information
and communications technology (ICT). The ability to capture, process audio and visual data
into digitally integral information that is transmitted and shared across various platforms to
world has brought immense changes in the way education is conceived, planned, and imparted
all over the world especially with the advent of digital media applications that present a vast
collection of educational resources that now make education easier to happen anytime,
anywhere. This paper aims to unveil the opportunities and applications of ICT that will
enhance the competence of the Computer Teacher in Nigeria as well as the encumbrances that
hamper ICT development in education. The paper also suggests some vital measures that could
help the country to reap the most benefit of ICT and make Nigeria an adept force in the global
science education arena: these include, improvement of electricity, mandating teachers to
acquire ICT knowledge and skills, provision of more ICT infrastructure (hardware and
software) and improvement of general access to the Internet in Nigerian schools.
