Self-Concept and Academic Performance of Senior Secondary School Students in North-Central, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated on influence of self-concept on academic performance of senior secondary school students in North-Central Nigeria. Four research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive-correlational research survey was employed. The population consisted of 785,795 students. The study sampled 396 students. The instruments used consist of both survey and test performance which were constructed by the researchers and are tested using test retest method, a reliability coefficient of Alpha level of 0.86, was found for self-concept. The data was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics (r) and t-test. The result shows that there is significant relationship between self-concept and academic performance of public senior secondary school students in North-Central, Nigeria; and there is significant difference between male and female students self-concept of senior secondary schools in North-Central, Nigeria. Based on the finding the study, recommended that government at all levels should recruit more competent teachers to improving self-concept of students which will impact positively on students academic performance.
