Geriatric Healthcare System and the Elderly Population in Ibadan Metropolis
Abstract
The gradual aging of the global population is an undeniable demographic shift that has
profound implications in the 21st century. With the increasing life expectancy, there is a rapid
rise in the proportion of elderly individuals within society. The main objective of this study is
to explore the impact of gerontology care systems on the elderly population in Ibadan
metropolis. A descriptive survey research design was employed for this investigation. Simple
random sampling was utilized to select 105 participants for the study. The analysis revealed a
significant but slight difference (t(206)= 48.85, P<.05) in access to gerontology care services
among the elderly in Ibadan metropolis. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found
between the quality of gerontology care services and adherence to evidence-based practices
(r=.398, n=105, p(.000)<.05), as well as between cultural competence and sensitivity of
gerontology care services (r=.610, n=105, p(.000)<.05). Based on these findings, it is
recommended to Promote continuous quality enhancement initiatives within healthcare
facilities to elevate the overall standard of gerontology care services. It was concluded that
gerontology care systems exert a significant influence on the elderly population.
