Screen Time Usage on Academic Performance, Moral Behaviour, Intergenerational Interaction and Personal Security among Adolescents in Secondary School in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the impact of screen time usage on academic performance, moral behaviour, intergenerational interaction and personal security among adolescents in secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria. The study investigated how screen time usage influence academic performance, moral behaviour, intergenerational interaction and personal security. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type. The population comprised of adolescents in secondary school in public secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria. A representative sample was selected using simple random sampling of 1500 respondents. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure screen time usage academic performance, moral behaviour, intergenerational interaction and personal security. The instrument was validated and reliability was established using standard statistical procedures. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square test to test the postulated hypotheses. Findings revealed that academic performance, moral behaviour, intergenerational interaction and personal security were significantly associated with screen time usage among adolescents in secondary school in Oyo state. The study concluded that screen time usage among adolescents in secondary school in Oyo State could influence academic performance, moral behaviour, intergenerational interaction and personal security. The study therefore recommends that if it is possible the use of screen by the adolescents should be banned completely otherwise there should be restriction to the hours, adolescents should use the screen daily. Finally, parents should restrict their adolescents to specific sites
