Abstract

This study investigated Effects of Computer-Simulation, Field-Trip and Expository Strategies
on Retention of Basic Science students using the concept of Pollution in Owerri. Two research
questions and two hypotheses guided the study, Quasi-experimental; non-equivalent control
group design, precisely, Pre-test, Post-test Control group design, with factorial arrangement
of 3 x 3 was used. Purposive sampling was used to select nine schools out of fifteen Coeducation schools. Population was 3000 Junior Secondary School one student’ in 2020/2021
academic year, 450 students were drawn from an intact class in nine schools. The instrument
entitled Basic Science Achievement Test on Pollution (BSAT) was validated and reliability of
0.65 index obtained was used for the study. Research questions were answered using
Descriptive Statistics, while hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance at 0.05
probability level. Findings showed that, there was no significant difference among the retention
means scores of Basic Science students taught the concept of Air and Water Pollution using
Simulation, Field-Trip and Expository Strategies, with students taught using Simulation
Strategy having the highest mean retention score, among others. It was recommended that,
Computer- Simulation and Field-Trip Strategies should be use to teach the concept of Air and
Water Pollution.
